Auburn Airport is also known as "Dick Scobee Field" after late "Francis Richard Scobee" Commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger "STS-51-L". He along with 6 other people perished on January 28, 1986 after an "O" ring seal failed on the outboard booster rocket just 73 seconds into its flight at 48,000 feet, it was his second shuttle launch.
