S50’s latest mural, “Ladies, Let’s Fly,” showcases two local female aviators destined to inspire future generations.
Joann Osterud, a world-record holder in aerobatics, was the first woman hired by Alaska Airlines. Her record for the longest inverted flight of 4 hours and 38 minutes, set in 1991, still stands, beating the 1933 record by 33 minutes. Joann was known for her aerobatics, including her “Ring of Fire” stunt. Osterud’s Stephens Akro plane is displayed in the Museum of Flight on its side, honoring her stunt flying legacy.
Kimberly Scott Ford, also an Alaska Airlines pilot, served in the United States Air Force and graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy. During her 25-year military career, Kim flew both the KC-135R Stratotanker and the C-17 Globemaster in worldwide air refueling and airlift operations.
Seattle artist Myron Curry brought the mural to life in 2026 to help inspire young aviators and celebrate the accomplishments of two amazing area pilots.
